I thought I would do a roundup of favorite things from this past month and include art and life things! Some are from instagram, some are articles or other things I am loving that you might love. This is for you, but it’s also for me to return to and remind myself of cool things that make me feel stoked.
Over the last few years I have taught myself to sew and slowly but surely have been sewing clothes for myself- next up is a skirt using the Henrietta pattern from my friend Sadie of Spaghetti Western Sewing- I LOVE this plaid option and might need to go this route. I love the chunky quality of the wool paired with tall cozy socks/shoes.
I love these strange giant oil paintings by Celeste Rapone- there is something about the way she uses color that is so compelling- and the way the women in her paintings take up space. Love them.
Kristen Sims is one of my fav contemporary painters/illustrators and I love seeing the behind the scenes process of her screen prints HERE
These paintings by Margaret Thompson, I love the way she uses color and texture and her paintings practically glow. She also uses symbolism and the altar in a really compelling way. They are definitely reminding me of Matisse but in a very empowered feminine way- not a female as object type of way.
These paintings by Carmen Cicero- I found out about his work- he lives in New York and is 94 years old, I believe. I love when you look at all his work the different things he has had time to explore- it is a nice reminder of the slowness of art making and also that your interests grow and shift after spending quality time with them. But also the repetition- you don’t have to find a new thing each time you make things- and that’s what is important about looking at older artists or artists who have made work for a long time vs. only looking at contemporaries.
I love vintage packaging and now I want to make feature matchbooks with my illustrations- like these.
You know I love movies, and I especially love horror movies- but I get a little scared that I am going to be visually traumatized sometimes- so my favorite thing to do is listen to a recap of the movie, learn all the staging, makeup and the way the movie was made and THEN watch the movie. This podcast is new to me- but I love that they go through a full scene by scene breakdown and give so much information- they do a ton of research, they are so funny- its a blast. If you love movies- and you love movie breakdowns- youll enjoy this. I started with the Dawn of the Dead one- because it’s a favorite of mine- and it was great. I learned a lot!
Upcoming Workshops
I have a few upcoming workshops which I will list below, if they interest you and you have questions, let me know! I would love to talk to you about them.
In 2020 I started asking myself how I could impart knowledge of materials or process while also making space for something unexpected. I created Yellow Brick Road- a 5 week class focused on bringing your ideas to life with a painting (or whatever medium you are excited about). You can learn more about YBR here.
After teaching over a hundred Yellow Brick Road students, I found I was being asked for another class but this time focused on fostering a practice. So I created Night Class (a class that isn’t always at night) which you can learn more about here.
